Sewing and Craft Class

SEWING AND CRAFT CLASS

The ‘Sewing Together at MARSS’ program aims to provide a unique opportunity for new arrivals to participate in a social group while learning new sewing skills and sharing their expertise with others.

This program can have significant benefits for those experiencing the negative mental health effects of isolation, such as depression and anxiety. For some, discussing emotions and wellbeing can be challenging, and sewing can provide a distraction and shared purpose necessary to build rapport and trust. By engaging in this activity, participants can open-up and have those conversations in a non-threatening way.

By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, the program helps newcomers feel more connected to their new community, contributing to their overall well-being and sense of belonging. Many participants have developed lasting friendships and gained valuable skills that will support them well into the future.

This program assists participants to gain knowledge and skills in –

  • Sewing machines
  • Overlockers
  • Pattern construction techniques

Participants also learn how to start and run a small business.
